INESCAPABLE ASSURANCE
Only
when our self-worth is intact will be able to sort through the motives
behind our actions and more importantly, the motives behind our belief
systems. Because people do not understand their motives, they are able
to bring about any change in their life. Failures are always repeated.
There is an almost inescapable assurance that the future wills no
difference from the past.
Only
when our self-worth is established, however, can a person look
realistically at their life, without being devastated. Low self-worth
produces the need to justify. It can never say “I am wrong,” or, “I need
to change,” or, “I am responsible.”
Because
self-worth is one of the deepest needs of man, one will develop a brief
system that protects the carnal self-worth system. This is why people
are defensive about what they believe. Their self-worth is explicitly
linked to what they believe.
With
self-worth intact, a heart full of love and desire to be a servant,
ministry becomes nothing, but sheer joy. The agony that comes is for
those who need help. Even that will not be tormented. Bible-based
self-worth always produces a “CAN DO” attitude.
It
is only this point of worth that we can ask one of the most important
questions of all: “WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE GOSPEL?” Our answer to that
question will answer the next question: “WHAT IS THE GOAL OF MY
MINISTRY?”
After
ten years of ministering in various capacities, I must say that a great
deal of that time I felt that it was my job to “get people right.” As I
have talked to ministries all across the country, that is the common
consensus. Our sermon, our counseling, or all that we do is geared
towards trying to get people right. This approach to ministry will
produce every woe imaginable to a leader. THIS FAULTY BASIS OF MINISTRY
IS THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF ALL THE TROUBLES WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY BLAMED ON
THE PEOPLE.
This
mentality communications is colored by something that destroys worth in
others. If we assume it is our job to get everyone right, there are two
definite things we will convey. First, we will have to convince them of
how wrong they are. Secondly, we will have to convince them of how
right we are.
